テクニカルライティングとは何か、というところから始まり、文法や表記の点から見たルールについて述べ（Part I）、
後半では具体的に文書の種類別に書き方が解説されている（Part II）。
技術英語に関するより好ましいライティング技術のみならず、ライターがよく犯す間違いも
多く取り上げられているので、エディターの人にもおすすめである。
通読した後はしばらく手引きとして活用するとよいが、
プロが机上で使う「辞書」としては薄いので、参照用としてはいずれは卒業したい。
ライティング技術については、指導者によって唱える方針が微妙に違っていたりするので、
現在迷っている人もいるかもしれないが、そういう人もとりあえず本書に合わせればいい。
ただ、方向性が一貫しているのでいいのだが、やや極端に感じる記述もあるので、
片っ端からすべて鵜呑みにするのではなく、自分のスタイルと比較検討する使い方をしてほしい。
明らかな誤りを正している箇所もあるが、書かれている内容の多くは「理想的な指針」であり、
唯一絶対の基準でないことは確かである。
日本で有効に活用する例としては、大学の理系学部の英語の授業で使うとよさそうだ。
Part Iを輪読して、Part IIを学期末や長期休業中のレポート課題にすると分量的には適切かと思われる。
テクニカルライティングを本業にしている人は１週間から１か月ぐらいで読み、知識の確認をするとよい。
ある程度実務経験のある人なら基本的な内容に感じられるはずで、
たまに新しい発見がある、ぐらいのものとして考えておきたい。
本書自体がテクニカルライティングのお手本ともいうべき平易な文章から構成されているので、
日本語で書かれた一般的な技術英語の指南書よりも得るものが多いように感じる。
基礎的な事項がクリアな構文で書かれているので、
よく意味のわからない部分があるなら辞書を引いてでも丁寧に読むべきである。

洋書ミステリーは途中で挫折してしまう私でも、この本はスラスラと読めます。又、この本を声に出して読む事で、英語の感覚を身に付ける事ができると思います。仕事上、英文ライティングを学ぶ必要がある方、読む価値はあると思いますよ。

I purchased this book because my job requires me to generate technical reports and I am glad that I bought it. Before this book, I was using a very expensive technical writing manual that was too thick to carry around with me, but The Element of Technical Writing is quite different. The book is less than 200 pages long and it is very light. Don’t underestimate this book simply because of its minuscule size. The book is far more useful than some of the other expensive manuals on the market.
